Greenfield Post Office offers 24 hour service at their Automated Postal Center on Labor Day, Monday
Manager Julie Joers from the Greenfield Post office reminds you that the Greenfield Post Office will be closed for retail and delivery services to observe Labor Day on Monday September 6, 2010. The Greenfield Post office does offer 24 hour service at our Automated Postal Center located in the outer lobby of the Greenfield Post office for your mailing needs.
Labor Day Facts:
The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary. By 1893, more than half the states were observing a “Labor Day” on one day or another, and Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon afterward, designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day.
Today, the term "labor" can be applied to strong professional unions, the national holiday, and even academic departments in colleges and universities. The modern American labor movement has grown from its roots in the colonial craft guilds to national professional associations with membership numbering millions. For many, Labor Day may simply signal the end of the summer months. But for the American workforce, the holiday remembers those who have labored for our country since its founding.
