Greenfield adult tennis tournament returns

June 29, 2009 | 0 comments

The popular Fourth of July fireworks that glow up the Greenfield skies are a summer tradition for many.

National Night Out and Dan Jansen Family Fest at Konkel Park are also hot-spots when the thermometer turns red.

But while those events have generated massive crowds throughout the years, one that has only been around for two years is gradually becoming more well-known:

The Greenfield Parks and Recreation Department’s summer adult tennis tournament.

And on July 11, the competition is back with the singles tournament set to begin at approximately 9 a.m.

However, unlike the 2007 and 2008 versions when the event was hosted at Greenfield High School, the 2009 tournament will be held at Whitnall High School.

Sign-up sheets can be picked up at Greenfield City Hall. The deadline for registration is July 9.

The entry fee for Greenfield residents is $7, while non-residents pay a reasonable $10.

Tennis players, ranging from 3.0 (Adv. Beginner) to 5.0 (very experienced) are welcome to enter the tournament.

All first-round, semifinal and championship matches are two-out-of-three sets, while players on the consolation side will battle in a nine-game pro-set.

Every participant, who will have a 15-minute break between all matches, is guaranteed to play at least two matches.

Trophies are awarded to first, second and third-place finishers.

Last summer, nine participants – from Greenfield and Milwaukee – entered the tournament and in 2007, 12 men and women competed for the crown.

Eric Groncki, who did not drop a set in three matches, captured the title in 2008 after he defeated Chandrakant Dharme, 6-4, 6-0 in the championship match. Brandon Levasseur left with top honors at the inaugural event in 2007.

And like the past two summers, Chris and Michelle Kuhagen are the coordinators and site supervisors for the third annual tournament.

For more information on the event, please contact the Greenfield Parks and Recreation Department at (414) 329-5370 or at parksrec@ci.greenfield.wi.us
