Whitnall High School's wrestling team suffered its first Woodland Conference loss of the season Wednesday, a 58-7 decision at Pewaukee. The host team extended its streak to 33 dual meet wins without a loss since joining the Woodland Conference in 2006.
The Falcons' Mason Howard (152 pounds) posted a major decision over Pewaukee's Jordan Porter and Kameron Bourgeois (112) defeated Alex Owens to account for all of Whitnall's scoring. Bourgeois is now the lone Falcon wrestler to remain undefeated for the season, as previously unbeaten Matt Price (140) dropped a 5-1 decision to Chris Czech, a place-winner in last season's state finals.
Price's effort and that of Evan Olson, who lost 7-2 at 135 pounds, were among the few bright spots, according to Whitnall coach John Quinlan. "Evan and Matt wrestled well even though they lost," he said.
Whitnall's lineup had to be shuffled due to injuries to two senior starters, Nathan Barnhart (160) and Miles Krohn (285). Barnhart had been undefeated prior to injuring his ankle in competition Saturday.
Even if the team had been at full strength, the final outcome wouldn't have changed much, according to coach Quinlan. "Obviously, they're a better team," he said after the match. "Pewaukee is very experienced, and we're really young."
"(Pewaukee) got physical and I was a little disappointed that we backed down," said the coach. "They were flat out more physical than we were, and hopefully we learned from that."
"We're going to have to grow up in a big hurry," Quinlan added, noting that the schedule has his squad meeting some of the state's top wrestlers at the West Allis Central Invitational this weekend, followed by a return to conference action Wednesday at arch rival Greenfield.
In non-conference action at Wisconsin Dells last Saturday, the Falcons defeated Portage, 42-36, and Janesville Parker, 51-28, while losing to Apple Valley, Minn., 51-21, and New Richmond, 39-30.
