Central boys basketball

Strong scoring balance was displayed by the Bulldogs in a split of two games at Homestead High School last weekend.

Central downed Madison West, 66-55, on Friday night behind 15 points each from freshman Brandon Key and Jarvis Garrett, 13 points by Najeal McMillian and nine from Tonnie Collier.

The Bulldogs used a 22-14 edge in the second quarter to go up 36-25, then extended that to 50-34 after three periods before withstanding a brief rally from West in the fourth.

On Saturday, Central dropped a 62-55 decision to a talented Homestead squad. Garrett and Ronald Turkvan each tallied 17 points, with Collier adding eight, McMillian seven and Key six.

"We are sharing the basketball," first-year coach David Mlachnik said. "Our balance has been good. Against Homestead, though, we missed some shots and were not moving our feet well on defense."

Whitnall girls basketball

After a 66-46 loss to Cedarburg on Friday in the first game of the Brookfield East Holiday Tournament, the Falcons bounced back with a 52-42 triumph over the host team on Saturday.

Jackie Gruszka led the way with 14 points and two assists, while Rachael Shulta totaled 12 points and two assists, Ashley Markowiak 11 points and two steals, Elena Busalacchi 10 rebounds and Lizzy Menden two steals.

"We had some nice transition baskets," coach Keith Larson said, "and we shot well."

That was not the case on Friday against Cedarburg, which bolted to a 13-3 lead after one quarter.

"They (the Bulldogs) were bigger and more physical," Larson said. "They had five three-point plays and a number of other offensive rebounds. This game did us some good, though."

Markowiak tallied 16 points, while Menden had eight and Lydia Pinscak and Shulta six apiece.

Greenfield boys basketball

A 22-7 first-quarter deficit proved to be too much for the Hustlin' Hawks in a 58-37 loss to Milwaukee Washington on Saturday night.

The Hawks steadied after the initial outburst but could not rally in Jack Miller's first game as head coach.

Sonnie Wilbert and Ricky Santiago each had nine points and Kyle Schahczinski eight for Greenfield.
