Central seventh-graders 10th in state invitational

The West Allis Central seventh-grade boys basketball team claimed 10th place in Division 1 of the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in La Crosse.

The tournament brought together 90 of the top community-based seventh-grade boys teams in Wisconsin.

Central swept its pool play, beating Green Bay Preble, 47-36; Marshfield, 48-35; and Appleton East, 52-35. The Bulldogs fell to Muskego, 56-55, in the round of 16, then dropped Menomonee Falls, 37-35, in consolation play. They lost to Eau Claire Memorial, 59-57, in the ninth-place game.

Central's Paysharne Jelks was named to the all-tournament team for Division 1.

Central was coached by Matthew Barr and Barron Johnson and team managers were Jessica Braun and Sherri Johnson.

Maciejewski, Brunelli help Oshkosh win title

Matt Maciejewski and Steve Brunelli, both of Greenfield, played on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team that won its second National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Division III national championship.

The Titans have now won six collegiate club national crowns, three in Division I, one in Division II and two in Division III.

Oshkosh wound up 40-4 and defeated the top seed, Ohio State University II, 25-19, 28-26, in the championship match.

Summer basketball league slated at Brookfield East

Teams are needed for a 10-game summer basketball league on Wednesday evenings at Brookfield East for fifth and sixth-grade boys.

The league dates are June 13, 20 and 27 and July 11 and 18. The league is limited to the first eight teams registered per grade level.
