Greenfield - The rebuilding effort of Greenfield's wrestling program took a big step forward with the advancement of Tyler Dorfner to the WIAA Division 1 State Individual Meet.
Dorfner, who will take a 29-15 record to the Kohl Center in Madison this weekend, qualified by finishing second in a sectional meet on Saturday at Waukesha West High School.
"I feel like this is a big step for Greenfield, with Tyler moving on to state," head coach Chris Otto said. "Greenfield has a storied past with its wrestling program and I am happy to be able to be a small part of the effort to get it back on top.
"Last year was a tough year for the program, but the kids bought into the vision we had and it paid dividends with Tyler going to state."
Joining Dorfner on the Kohl Center floor will be a pair of Whitnall wrestlers, Anthony Senthavisouk and Zach Barnhart.
Everyone will begin competition at 3 p.m. Feb. 21, and quarterfinals will be held this evening. The semifinals are at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 and the championship matches at 6 p.m. Feb. 23.
A major start
Dorfner, wrestling at 152 pounds, started the sectional with a 10-1 major decision but then was pinned in 3 minutes, 24 seconds by eventual champion Connor Price of Muskego.
He wrestled back to second place with a 13-6 decision over Tyler Wozny of Mukwonago and a 7-5 victory over Ryan Olson of Whitnall.
"Tyler has worked hard all year and had some ups and downs," Otto said. "(Olson) had beaten Tyler by a pin and major decision before Saturday and Tyler had a game plan on how to beat him. He executed his game plan and earned his way to Madison."
Dorfner said, "It was one of the best feelings ever and I couldn't even believe it when it happened. It just felt great knowing all the hard work I put in through the season paid off."
He will meet Logan Ballering of Oconomowoc (36-5) in his first state match.
"I'm excited to see what Tyler can do in Madison," Otto said.
Three decisions for title
For Whitnall, Senthavisouk (46-4) won at 106 pounds and Barnhart (43-8) took second at 170 pounds.
Senthavisouk posted three decisions at the sectional, winning 5-4, 10-6 and then 4-3 over Ethan Averill of Kettle Moraine in the final.
He will take on Aidan Yde of Hartland Arrowhead (33-10) in his debut at state.
Barnhart blanked his first two foes by scores of 7-0 and 8-0, then dropped a 10-3 decision to Elliot Yanasak of Brookfield Central in the title match. He took second, though, by virtue of his earlier victory over Jason Alvarez of West Allis Central.
Barnhart challenges Jackson Bailey of Beaver Dam (39-2) in his first match at state.
Earning third for Whitnall were Olson at 152 pounds (31-21) and Ethan Harycki at 220 (33-15).
Coming in fourth were Alex Morton of Greenfield at heavyweight and Blake Leslie of Whitnall at 126 pounds.
Dropping their first matches were Greenfield's Dylan Kumbera (126), Thomas Friedbacher (145), Chad Karges (182) and Matt Braatz (195) and Whitnall's Joe Price (120), Dylan Kellner (132), Nick Monty (138) and Mike Langenohl (182).
