Highlights of area high school sports
Hale boys basketball
West Allis Hale nearly grabbed its first win of the season but lost, 53-50, at crosstown rival Central on Jan. 26.
A 3-point basket by Central with 40 seconds remaining lifted the Bulldogs.
With 15 seconds left, Hale was whistled for a charge call, and the Huskies' potential game-tying 3-pointer with 3 seconds left was off the mark.
Hale's Taylor Chladek and Ryan Kaminski scored 10 points each.
Three nights later, Menomonee Falls scored a season-high 95 points in a 95-58 win at Hale.
Chladek and Steven Kopet both scored 18 points for the Huskies, but five Indians reached double digits, led by Jalen Ramey's career-high 20 and J.P. Tokoto's 18.
Central girls basketball
The Bulldogs recovered from consecutive Greater Metro Conference losses quickly.
West Allis Central, which lost to Brookfield Central and Divine Savior Holy Angels on Jan. 15 and 22, rebounded with a 59-29 victory over West Allis Hale on Jan. 26 and a 42-32 win over visiting Hamilton on Friday, both at home.
The Bulldogs received 39 combined points from Mehryn Kraker (14), Janie Myles (13) and Lauren Hibbard (12) to knock off Hamilton. Three days earlier, the same trio combined for 45 points, led by Myles' 18.
The two wins lifted the Bulldogs into second place in the conference at 7-2, 10-4 overall.
Central boys basketball
The Bulldogs snapped a seven-game losing streak and picked up their first win since Dec. 22 with a 53-50 home victory over Hale on Jan. 26.
Central's Jarvis Garrett scored all of his 15 points from behind the 3-point arc as the Bulldogs hit eight 3s total. Anthony Harris scored a game-high 16 points for Central.
Hamilton outscored visiting Central in each quarter to defeat the Bulldogs, 56-47, Friday.
Central's Najeal McMillan scored 15 points and Harris chipped in 14 for the Bulldogs (8-9, 3-5), but it was not enough to overcome a 21-point effort from Brett Meinecke and Kleman Hamadi's 17 points.
Whitnall boys basketball
Whitnall opened the game with a 19-7 first quarter and never looked back in a 60-31 rout of visiting Greendale on Friday.
Falcons leading scorer William Pelkofer dropped in a game-high 21 points, including three 3s. Jake Lehmann chipped in 14 and Stephen Pelkofer added 11.
"We had a good first half offensively and a solid defensive second half, holding Greendale to seven points," Whitnall coach Kent Kroupa said. "We continue to improve, especially on the defensive end."
Whitnall improved to 10-4 overall, 8-4 conference.
The Pelkofers and Lehmann combined for 49 points in the Falcons' 64-41 nonconference win at Big Foot on Jan. 25. William Pelkofer had a game-high 24.
Whitnall girls basketball
Amy Ford's 3-pointer rattled in and out at the buzzer as Whitnall lost, 45-43, at Greendale on Friday.
Greendale's Mary Merg, who scored a game-high 20 points, made her last of three 3s with 25 seconds left to put her team ahead by two. Whitnall took possession, ran the clock down to 12 seconds and called timeout before running a set play. Ford, who had team-best 16 points, got a good look but could not get it to fall as Whitnall dipped to 5-9 overall, 5-7 conference.
Since then, the Falcons' have lost five of six, thanks in large part to a string of injuries. Rachel Serio and Kalina Al-Mohareb remain out and could miss the rest of the season. Lisa Donaldson, who scored eight points Friday, continues to be bothered by a leg injury that kept her out of action earlier this season.
"We're still dealing with injuries," Whitnall's Keith Larson said. "Missing three starters makes it tough, but it also gives others opportunities."
