Dec. 29, 2009 | 0 comments

West Allis Central boys basketball

The Bulldogs limited Milwaukee School of Languages to single digits in each of the first three quarters and overcame a slow start of their own to post a 49-34 home win Dec. 22.

Najeal McMillian scored a game-high 14 points and Nick Starich added 11 as Central improved to 7-1 overall as of Monday.

School of Languages scored just 18 points through the first three quarters, including two in the first. The Bulldogs scored just six in the first before steadily building their lead.

Central played in a holiday tournament at Green Bay Preble Tuesday and Wednesday.

West Allis Central girls basketball

The Bulldogs were bumped from the unbeaten ranks by their former coach Dec. 22.

Facing former longtime Central coach Steve Hluchnik and his new team, the host Oak Creek Knights, the Bulldogs lost 59-45.

The matchup featured two Division I college recruits: Central's Lauren Hibbard and Oak Creek's Angela Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who will be playing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee next year, was outstanding with a season-high 31 points, including 16 free throws.

Hibbard, a Loyola of Chicago recruit, had 13 points. Central's Janie Myles led the team with 16.

The Bulldogs, who played at Waterford on Monday, dipped to 5-1 overall.

Greenfield boys basketball

Alec Molter stayed hot in a 61-49 Hustlin' Hawks win at Shorewood on Dec. 22.

Molter scored a game-high 21 points to bump his season average to 17.9 while helping snap Greenfield's modest two-game losing streak.

Jason Mermolia had 12 points, and Iyad Assad and Ricky Santiago chipped in eight each for the Hawks, who improved to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the Woodland Conference by outscoring the Mariners by nine points in the second half.

West Allis Hale girls basketball

The Huskies were unable to overcome a slow start in a 50-42 nonconference loss to visiting Wilmot on Dec. 22.

Wilmot raced out to a 19-6 lead en route to handing Hale its sixth straight loss to start the season, as of Monday.

Jennifer Wellnitz scored 18 points for the Huskies and Racheal Bekeris added eight, but it was not enough to offset Wilmot's Jackie Herman's huge effort of 29 points.

The Huskies (0-6) played in a holiday tournament in Seymour on Monday and Tuesday.

Greenfield girls basketball

St. Francis got a game-high 22 points from Becky Gilbreath and limited the Hawks to just 14 points through three quarters in a 53-31 win at Greenfield on Dec. 22.

Gilbreath made nine shots, the same number Greenfield (1-6, 1-5) made as a team.

Wild hockey

Cory Chapp had three goals and three assists and Marques Surita had four goals as the Greendale co-op defeated the Wild United, which includes players from Whitnall, 11-2, at The Ponds in Brookfield on Dec. 22.

Jake Hardin and Mike Yablong had one goal and three assists each and Brett Pokrzewinski had four assists for Greendale (4-5).

Clayton Anderson and Alex Sommerfeld scored goals for the Wild (0-8).
