West Allis Hale cross country

In a meet that featured six state-ranked teams, including No. 1 Marquette, the Huskies placed eighth at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational at McCarty Park on Friday.

Hale defeated West Allis Central for the third time this season to claim the traveling trophy signifying the West Allis city championship for the 33rd time in 44 years and the second year in a row.

Hale's Alex Murray placed 36th of 422 runners in 17 minutes, 32 seconds. Also scoring for the Huskies were Sawyer Wickersham (42nd, 17:37); Milan Stojanovic (55th, 17:51); Jacob Ebben (58th, 17:53) and Sam Gagliano (72nd, 18:06).

The team will return to McCarty Park at 9:45 a.m. Saturday for the Greater Metro Conference meet.

West Allis Hale football

The Huskies' slim playoff hopes took a significant hit with a 41-19 road loss at Hamilton on Friday.

With the loss, Hale now needs to win its final two games to be eligible for the WIAA postseason. The Huskies (2-5 overall, 2-3 conference) play at Brookfield East (3-4, 1-4) at 7 p.m. Friday, but then host unbeaten Marquette (7-0, 5-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, in the regular season finale.

Hale led, 6-3, after the first quarter against Hamilton. Dan Sotiros tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Justin Przeracki for the Huskies' lone score until Martin Shaw returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

West Allis swimming

The Wave won the Packer Relays in Cudahy on Oct. 5, narrowly outscoring runner-up Wauwatosa West, 122-118.

West Allis placed first in three events: the 200-yard medley, 300 breaststroke medley and diving.

Rachel Schumitsh, Kayla Martin and Anastasiya Dyedkova teamed with Stephanie Nimmer in the 200-yard medley (2:10.72). The same trio joined Samantha Young for a win in the 300 breast (3:52.92).

Lauren Riegert, Alexa O'Brian, Molly Sykes and Taylor Lux finished in 1:10.23 in the 100-yard medley, good enough for second.

Martin also won the 200 free (2:07.24) and was second in the 100 breast (1:16.49) in West Allis' 129-57 loss at Menomonee Falls on Oct. 8.

Whitnall cross country

Dana Steffen was just 13 seconds off the pace set by Oconomowoc's Mandy Prom and finished seventh at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invite at McCarty Park on Friday.

Steffen finished in 15:31 and her teammate, Mary Erickson, was 22nd in 16:08 as the Falcons placed 12th of 15 teams.

Whitnall's Jake Lehmann and Mitch Olson posted top-30 times for the 12th-place boys team. Lehmann ran 21st (17:04) and Olson 28th (17:17).

Greenfield swimming

Sienna Bast and Esmeralda Perez helped Greenfield to three wins and a fifth-place overall finish at the Packer Relays on Oct. 5.

The 900-freestyle unit of Nicole Lederich, Ellen Campbell, Bast and Perez won in 9:57.99; Bast, Perez, Lindsay Bakken and Lederich swam first in the 300 butterfly (3:19.42); and Bast, Perez, Campbell and Bakken were victorious in the 400 medley (4:42.52).

Bast won both the 200 and 500 free and Perez picked up a win in the 100 fly as Greenfield lost at New Berlin Eisenhower, 124-51, one day later.

West Allis Hale girls volleyball

With four wins and the tournament title of the Shoreland Slam on Saturday, the Huskies climbed over .500 overall entering the final week of the regular season.

Hale beat Greenfield, 19-25, 25-13, 15-12, in the championship match at Shoreland to improve to 17-16.

Prior to the tournament, the Huskies improved to 3-3 in the Greater Metro Conference with a 25-21, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19 home win over Hamilton on Oct. 6, behind Sarah Fabina's match-high 48 assists, Erin Barbeau's 17 kills and Angie Lopez's 16 digs.

Two days later, Lopez had 16 digs again as Hale beat host Mukwonago, 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 25-16. Barbeau had a match-high 12 kills and Fabina led all players with 27 assists.

Whitnall volleyball

The Falcons bounced back from consecutive four-game losses to knock off visiting Shorewood, 25-12, 25-11, 25-8, Oct. 8.

Kimmy Kopp led a dominant effort with 12 assists and eight aces, both match highs. Kristen Neuendorf had eight kills, Kelly Ertl made 10 digs and Cass Szczewski had four blocks as Whitnall improved to 3-6 in the Woodland Conference.

On Oct. 7, the Falcons lost, 25-14, 26-28, 25-17, 25-20, in a nonconference match at Franklin. One day earlier, despite Ertl's 15 digs and Allison Czaplewski's 19 assists, Whitnall lost at Brown Deer, 21-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-22.

Greenfield soccer

The Hustlin' Hawks did all they could to give undefeated league champion South Milwaukee its only blemish during its first season in the Woodland Conference. But Greenfield fell just short.

South Milwaukee's Austin Szymczak's goal in the 94th minute of the second overtime period snapped a scoreless tie and kept the host Rockets unbeaten in Woodland play. It was Greenfield's third straight one-goal loss.

Two days earlier against visiting Greendale, the Hawks held a 3-2 lead before Ross Fieldbinder tied the score with a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Fieldbinder then gave his team a 4-3 win with a kick in the 83rd minute of overtime, his fourth goal of the game.

Jesus Cisneros, Eric Krystowiak and Zac McLees each scored a goal for Greenfield, which was seeded 11th and played Bradley Tech on Tuesday in a WIAA regional semifinal. The winner plays either South Milwaukee or Milwaukee Pulaski on Thursday, time and location to be determined.

West Allis Central cross country

Junior Alex Gonzales just missed cracking the top-10 in the 422-runner Wisconsin Lutheran Invite at McCarty Park on Friday.

Gonzales finished 11th in 16:49, seven seconds behind 10th-place runner Ryan Christman of Wauwatosa East.

Central's Casey Muszytowski ran 35th in 17:31 as the Bulldogs finished 11th of 18 teams.

Central sophomore Abigail Pranghofer also ran well, taking 13th in 16:02 for the 10th-place Bulldogs.

Greenfield boys volleyball

The Hawks inched closer to .500 in the Woodland Conference with a 25-10, 25-7, 25-12 sweep of visiting South Milwaukee on Oct. 5.

Patrick Stemo's 18 assists and Alex Molter's eight kills led Greenfield, which improved to 2-3 in league play with the win.

Conner Lewandowski chipped in with six digs, Kevin Hanneken had three blocks and Seth Kempfer nailed four aces.

Greenfield football

Jason Mermolia's 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave his team a 7-0 advantage, but it was all down hill from there for the winless Hustlin' Hawks.

Host Wauwatosa West scored 28 unanswered points en route to a 28-7 victory Friday.

Ray Sterling caught a pair of touchdown passes from Dylan Roghan to give the Trojans a 14-7 lead in the second quarter and West added a pair of short TD runs in the final two quarters.

Greenfield (0-7 overall, 0-6 conference) managed just 102 yards of total offense.

Greenfield cross country

Jamie Bernam ran 33rd to lead the Hawks girls team at the Shorewood Invite on Saturday.

The sophomore turned in a time of 16:46, Greenfield's first sub-17-minute time this fall. Fellow sophomore Jenny Fetter finished 62nd in 17:58 for Greenfield, which placed 12th of 14 teams.

For the boys, who were 11th of 18 teams, junior Dan Pitroski finished in 18:05 and Mike Hensiak in 18:55, the first time the team has had two sub-19-minute times in the same race.
