Hawks dominate All-Suburban choices
The Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks softball team's successful season translated to a sweep of the top NOW All-Suburban Softball Team awards.
Junior utility player Shannon Butts was named this year's player of the year, one year after her older sister, Stacey, won the same award in 2008. Shannon Butts made the team as a catcher after last season.
Greenfield's Jack Miller was named the coach of the year. Also, Stacey Butts, a senior infielder, and Sarah Fisher, a senior outfielder, also made the team. It was Stacey Butts' third selection to the team and Fisher's first.
The Greenfield players were joined by New Berlin Eisenhower's Lauren Beres (pitcher), Kayla Schlegel (pitcher), Liz Wiese (outfield) and Megan Duerlinger (catcher); Menomonee Falls' Beth Nitz (pitcher) and Morgan McCoy (outfield); Brookfield East's Lexi Sotiros (infield); Germantown's Amy Johnson (infield) and Jannelle Schroder (utility); Cudahy's Alisa Damitz (infield) and Homestead's Michelle Zoeller (infield).
West Allis Central, West Allis Hale and Whitnall did not have a representative on this year's team.
For the first time ever, fans had a say in which players made the team through online voting. Fan voting accounted for 25 percent of the selection process; staff voting made up the rest.
The leading online vote-getters at each position: utility - Shannon Butts (94 votes); outfield - Fisher (69); infield - Stacey Butts (89); pitcher - Cudahy's Sam Homa (86); catcher - Duerlinger (108); coach of the year - Miller (89); and player of the year - Sotiros (74).
