Greenfield boys cross country surges to third in Woodland
Whitnall girls runners claim sixth in conference
Casey and Andy Sabinash led the way as the Greenfield boys cross country team claimed a solid third place in the Woodland Conference Meet on Friday evening at Sheridan Park.
Casey Sabinash finished 13th in 17 minutes, 10 seconds, while Andy took 17th with 17:19.
They paced the Hustlin' Hawks to third with 108 points, trailing only Shorewood with 40 points and New Berlin Eisenhower with 88 points in the 10-team field.
Dylan Kumbera came in 22nd (17:30), Tom Friedbacher 25th (17:38) and Quinton Kufahl 31st (17:52) to round out the Hawks' scoring.
"(This was) one of the team's best conference meets in 25 years," team parent Sharon Sabinash said. "The boys ran an outstanding race, with the Hawks passing at least 10 runners in the last 200 meters."
Greenfield faced a strong field as well, as the Woodland has four teams in the state rankings, led by top-rated Shorewood.
Casey Sabinash earned second-team all-conference, and Andy Sabinash and Kumbera both snared honorable mention.
The Greenfield girls, who were hard hit by injuries, had only one runner, Leslie Hoffman, who finished 48th (17:54).
The Whitnall girls tallied 118 points for sixth place, led by Jasmine Van Tine in 12th (16:20), Nora Imperl 14th (16:22) and Kim Hurst 15th (16:23). All three received second-team all-Woodland.
"Nora is a senior out (for cross country) for the first time and is still learning how to compete," head coach Michael Thompson said. "She's really coming into her own and dropped over 30 seconds off her previous best time."
Jennifer Bahling finished 37th (17:20), Alyssa Woo 40th (17:30) and Kristy Crivello 41st (17:31).
"This was the first meet all season in which we had our full varsity squad, as many were held out at times due to various injuries," Thompson said.
The Falcons boys finished 10th with 221 points and were without their top runner, Alex Richardson.
Seth Nowak took 19th (17:22) to claim honorable mention in the conference. Matt Paruzynski ran 37th (18:09), Tyler Nape 44th (18:20), Cade Dombrowski 59th (19:05), Blake Stencil 62nd (19:37) and Alex Meyers 63rd (19:43).
