The signature victory that the Greenfield girls volleyball team has been seeking may have come last week.
The Hustlin' Hawks tripped up defending Woodland Conference champion Pius XI 25-27, 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 on Sept. 17.
Greenfield handed the Lady Popes their first conference defeat of the season.
"This was a big win for our team," head coach Britany Pfeifer said. "We needed to beat Pius to get that confidence against a top-10 ranked opponent."
Jessie Kalous collected 20 kills and three blocks on the evening, while sister Lizzy added 12 kills. Luci Krenzke tallied 48 assists and Lauren Bullock 32 digs, while Sam DeLeon added 20 digs and three service aces.
"Sam is a third-year starter, and her defense has really picked up this season," Pfeifer said. "She is a very solid all-around player."
Pfeifer said Bullock, DeLeon and Katarina Djurica were on top of their games defensively and that Angela Deubig played well at the starting right-side spot.
"She is gaining more and more offensive confidence," the coach said of Deubig. "She is a player to watch on our team, and by the end of the season, she will be making a lot of big plays."
Pfeifer said the victory was a total team effort, and that extended to the home crowd.
"We have had tremendous support from our student section," she continued. "They are like our 15th team member. Having that school spirit means a lot in these big games."
Greenfield then downed St. Francis 25-18, 25-10, 25-11, on Sept. 19 to improve to 4-0 in Woodland duals.
Kalous posted 19 kills and five blocks, while Krenzke dished out 36 assists and Bullock came up with 20 digs.
Pfeifer also was happy that she did not see a letdown after the big victory over Pius.
"I was afraid they would lose focus, and they didn't," she said. "They came out and got the job done. This group is starting to play consistently together no matter what lineup is on the floor. I have confidence in all 14 players."
