West Allis Central, Whitnall shine at Zelinski Duals
Teams combine for four unbeaten wrestlers
Greenfield - Both the Whitnall and West Allis Central wrestling teams enjoyed some success at the annual Zelinski Memorial Duals on Saturday at Whitnall High School.
The Bulldogs finished fourth in the event, trailing only Merrill, Pulaski and Mukwonago, and had one unbeaten entrant: Alan Silva at 132 pounds.
The Falcons took 10th place and saw three wrestlers navigate the tough competition with 5-0 marks: Anthony Senthavisouk at 106 pounds, Nick Monty at 138 and 145 pounds and Zach Barnhart at 170 and 182 pounds.
The day was also productive for another, more important, reason. Whitnall head coach John Quinlan said about $5,000 was raised toward the Joel Zelinski Scholarship.
"This was a great day overall, as more than 50 parents, alumni and community members all pitched in to help put on a premier tournament for a great cause," Quinlan said.
Over the years, the tournament has provided over $80,000 in scholarships to area seniors.
As far as the action on the mat, Central won its first two duals to advance to Pool A, where it lost all three duals. Despite that, the Bulldogs still came away with fourth place among 16 teams.
Central opened with a 46-18 romp over Green Bay Preble, then dropped Pewaukee, 37-25. In Pool A, the Bulldogs fell to Pulaski, 47-22; second-rated Merrill, 51-17; and Mukwonago, 52-17.
Silva went 5-0 for the day with three pins, a major decision and a tight 3-2 decision over Scott Arneson of Merrill.
Going 4-1 were Tyus White at 106 pounds, Tere White at 113 pounds, Mark Choinski at 138 pounds and Dylan Diebitz at 170 pounds.
Choinski posted three technical falls and a major decision, and his lone loss was a 6-5 decision to Hank Mattson of Mukwonago.
Diebitz collected a pin and a technical fall but sustained his first defeat of the season with a 2-1 decision at the hands of Merrill's David Pophal.
The Bulldogs also lost a 40-25 Greater Metro Conference dual meet to Menomonee Falls on Jan. 17 despite pins from Tere White (113), Diebitz (170) and Jason Alvarez (182).
On Saturday, Whitnall went 3-2 in duals for the Zelinski tournament.
The Falcons started with a 43-24 loss to Beaver Dam, which dropped them into the consolation bracket. They then reeled off three straight victories, beating Kenosha Bradford (36-22), Germantown (43-31) and Fond du Lac (51-16) before losing to Muskego, 37-26, in the ninth-place dual.
Senthavisouk finished 5-0 at 106 with three pins, while Monty was 5-0 at 138 and 145 with two pins and a major decision and Barnhart 5-0 at 170 and 182 with a pair of major decisions.
Ethan Harycki went 4-1 at 220 and heavyweight. Notching 3-2 records were Kevin Seyedin at 113, Joe Price at 120 and Michael Langenohl at 182 and 195.
Whitnall improved to 20-10 in duals for the season.
Central visits Brookfield East at 7:30 p.m. today to close out GMC duals. Whitnall takes on Wauwatosa at Wauwatosa West at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.
