Greenfield girls grab volleyball tourney crown at Park
Hawks still unbeaten in conference duals
Greenfield - In its fourth invitational of the season, the Greenfield girls volleyball team broke through with a championship.
The Hustlin' Hawks traveled to Racine Park on Saturday and claimed the tournament crown by going unbeaten. Along the way, they topped Oak Creek, West Allis Central, The Prairie School and Park, then downed Racine St. Catherine's, 25-15, 18-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-11, in the championship match.
"It was just the tournament outcome we needed," said head coach Britany Pfeifer, whose team went 13-2 in games for the tournament. "We have played four straight weekends, and we wanted to finish one on top of the field. The team played really well together."
In previous tournaments, the Hawks had finished 3-2 at Kenosha Tremper, taken second in the Silver Division at Brookfield Central and placed seventh at the Muskego Invitational.
Greenfield also remained perfect in Woodland Conference action with two more dual victories last week, downing Brown Deer, 25-16, 25-11, 25-10, on Sept. 20 and South Milwaukee, 25-14, 25-7, 25-7, on Sept. 18.
Against the Falcons, Sam DeLeon collected seven kills, Luci Krenzke 26 assists, Kattie Djurica four aces, Lauren Bullock 15 digs and Jessie Kalous three blocks.
In the South Milwaukee match, Kalous totaled 12 kills, Krenzke 27 assists and Bullock 16 digs.
"The team is led by Kalous, a middle blocker," said Pfeifer, whose team improved to 5-0 in Woodland duals. "She is really starting to step up her game offensively. Krenzke has also stepped into her starting setter role nicely. She is moving the ball around and running our middles whenever possible.
"Our defense has really started to work well also. Veterans in the back row are Bullock and DeLeon. Djurica has really taken her back row game up a few notches and become a solid performer."
The Hawks are also receiving help from two freshmen, middle blocker Lizzy Kalous and right-side hitter Angela Deubig.
"Both of them are becoming a lot more confident and comfortable on the court," Pfeifer said.
As the Woodland and WIAA tournaments approach, Pfeifer said the Hawks are peaking at the right time.
"The girls look like they are having fun together, and that makes a big difference," she said.
Greenfield will visit Wauwatosa West on Sept. 27 and has duals against New Berlin Eisenhower and Pewaukee next week.
"I am excited to see how we match up against the other half of our conference," Pfeifer said. "If the girls keep playing like they did this weekend, we should be successful."
