Special Olympians compete in outdoor tourney

More than 2,000 people gathered in Eau Claire to compete, coach or volunteer in the 2010 Special Olympics Wisconsin State Outdoor Sports Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

Among them were 10 West Allis and two Greenfield athletes that competed in sports such as softball, tee ball, bocce, golf and tennis.

West Allis' Katie Muench was a winner in bocce. Taking second were Johnny Nieves, Ryan Rutka, Craig Becker and Stephanie Becker in the softball team competition.

West Allis thirds came from Emily Wisch in softball tee ball and Justin Galagan and Wayne Antosiewicz in team softball competition, and fourths came from Rick Kuhs and Ryan Wick in team softball.

Greenfield's Michael Gravermoen was second in team softball, and Greenfield's Victoria Lawrence was fourth in bocce ball.

West Allis athlete takes 3rd at Special Olympics nationals

Craig Becker of West Allis finished third in team basketball in the 2010 Special Olympics U.S.A. National Games from July 18 to 23 in Lincoln, Neb.

Becker was one of 62 athletes on Team Wisconsin. Some 3,000 athletes participated in the six-day event, which is held every four years.

Oak Creek distance runner wins Franklin race

Tyler Fyock, 28, of Oak Creek won the 2-mile Franklin Country Run on Aug. 7.

Fyock's time of 10 minutes, 14 seconds, was 20 seconds better than runner-up Gary Garcia, 26, of Milwaukee.

Rounding out the top five were Casey Sabinash, 14, Greenfield, 11:40; Bob Flees, 26, Waterford, 11:57; and Andy Sabinash, 14, Greenfield, 11:59.

Franklin alumni triathlon set for Aug. 20

The Franklin High School Alumni Triathlon will be held Aug. 20 at the high school.

Check in is at 5 p.m. and the swimming event begins at 6. After swimming 250 meters, competitors will bike 7 miles and run 2 miles.

Current and former Franklin athletes and faculty members from the district are invited to take part. Family members are also welcome.

Donations to the cross country program will be accepted, and food and beverages will be served after the event.

Oak Creek Soccer Club in need of U10 players

The Oak Creek Soccer Club is looking for players to fill its U10 roster.

Players born between Aug. 1, 2000, and July 31, 2002, are eligible. Online registration is available at oakcreeksoccerclub.org. Additional questions should be referred to the Oak Creek Soccer Club at (414) 573-8875.
