Six advance in School Board election

Feb. 21, 2012 | 0 comments

Greenfield - Former Greenfield School Board member Cathy Walsh came out on top of a field of seven candidates running for the School Board in Tuesday's primary election.

She and five others - Russell Spahn, Len Cich, Brad Sponholz and Rick Moze - will now head for the general election April 3, when voters will chose three of them to serve three-year terms on the board.

Eliminated in the primary was Mike Gierl.

Election results are unofficial until they are certified by the board of canvassers. The unofficial totals do not include provisional ballots or late-arriving absentee ballots.

Unofficial results are:

Cathy Walsh 868

Russell Spahn 821

Len Cich 679

Brad Sponholz 623

Rick Moze (inc.) 617

Paul Palama 553

Mike Gierl 525

Walsh, 59, served on the Greenfield School Board for 18 years from 1992 to 2010.

Spahn, 58, is recently retired as Greenfield fire chief.

Cich, 71, who retired from Consolidated Freightways, is a former operations manager for Waste Management of Chicago and a former small business owner in residential and commercial remodeling.

Sponholz, 47, is a registered nurse who ran unsuccessfully for state Assembly District 7 against longtime Democratic incumbent Peggy Krusick in 2008 and 2010.

Moze, 58, a brewing technician with Miller/Coors for more than 36 years, is finishing his first three-year term on the board.

Palama, 49, is maintenance manager of St. Charles Borromeo Church and School. He also ran for the School Board last year.
