Alleged 'shock' robber
headed to court
A preliminary hearing will be held Monday for James Slater, 33, of Milwaukee, who was charged in connection with an attempted July 13 robbery of the Great Midwest Bank, 5150 S. 76th St., in Greenfield, by use of an electronic stun device.
He faces charges of attempted bank robbery and possession of an electronic stun device.
According to the complaint filed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office:
The suspect threatened bank employees with the stun gun, and then tied them up in the bank vault.
During the robbery, a customer walked in. When the robber attempted to tie him up also, the customer fought back. In the ensuing fight, the customer sustained an ear injury. However, the robber was forced to flee without any money.
Authorities tied Slater to the crime through the use of DNA, matching a sample taken from gloves used in the robbery. Slater was later arrested.
The charges carry a potential maximum sentence of $50,000 and up to 20 years in prison.
Birds of a feather
flock to Subway
The last place you'd expect to find chickens roaming freely is outside a sandwich shop that serves chicken sandwiches.
But that was the case Sept. 10, when a caller reported three chickens were running through the parking lot at Subway on 60th Street and Layton Avenue at about 4:30 a.m.
Police in fact located four chickens there, apparent escapees from a yard in the 4700 block of South 60th Street. The owner was contacted but wasn't too interested in re-cooping his chickens at that hour, but police were able to corral the chickens with the assistance of Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission.
Police advised the city health department about the code violation, and the owner was given a copy of the city ordinance prohibiting chickens.
