resigns from council
West Allis — James Sengstock, who has served for more than four decades on the West Allis Common Council, announced last week that he will step down Nov. 30.
He planned to make a more formal announcement at his last council meeting Nov. 19, but mentioned at last week's Common Council meeting that he wants to spend more time with his family.
A special election will likely be held in April to elect someone to fill the two years remaining on Sengstock's four-year term.
Sengstock also often served as Common Council president, elected by fellow aldermen, but stepped down from that honor in April 2012.
New fire chief
named in West Allis
West Allis — The West Allis Police and Fire Commission has named Steve Bane, one of the city's assistant fire chiefs, to take over the Fire Department following the retirement of Chief Steven Hook.
Bane had been in charge of the emergency medical services.
"He's an excellent choice," said West Allis Mayor Dan Devine.
to start at library
West Allis — Very soon now, work is slated to start on refurbishing restrooms at the West Allis Public Library.
The facilities have not been modified since they were first installed in the 25-year-old building.
The work will be funded by proceeds of a $1.3 million bequest from a grateful patron. The library put it into an endowment fund and invested it through the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.
Proceeds have previously been used for the new self-checkout system.
