City wins vouchers to help homeless veterans
West Allis - The Community Development Authority of West Allis has been awarded 50 Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide permanent housing, long-term case management and supportive services to veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
The VA Medical Center will partner to provide the services.
"These vouchers will allow West Allis to participate in the care for our veterans who have found themselves in a tough position," Mayor Dan Devine stated in a news release announcing the vouchers.
Veterans approved to receive HUD-VASH vouchers will be helped by the VA to find an apartment. Once they have been approved for a unit, the veterans will pay about 30 percent of their monthly income toward rent and utilities and the rest will be covered by the HUD-VASH voucher. The VA program also will provide services such as money management skills and facilitation of tenant-landlord communications.
Yard waste pickups winding down for year
West Allis - West Allis is nearing the end of its yard waste pickups for the year.
Residents can rake leaves, flowers, thatch, garden debris and vines into the street at the curb on their regular trash collection days until Nov. 13.
To keep the leaves from blowing around, city officials advise wetting them down.
Grass clippings and woody plants should not be placed along curbs, and potted plants should be free of their pots and the soil shaken from them.
