Mexican eatery to replace Champps

Champps Americana will close its Greenfield restaurant in May and be replaced by a Mexican restaurant.

El Beso Restaurant presented its plans to the city's Plan Commission on Tuesday. The commission recommended the Common Council approve the business, though a public hearing will likely not be held for another six to eight weeks.

The restaurant was purchased by the Bouraxis family, who will pattern the new business after their other restaurant, El Feugo, 909 W. Layton Ave., Milwaukee.

El Beso (Spanish for "The Kiss") will include a new outdoor patio with palm trees, a fountain and fireplace.

Architect Bob Williams told the Plan Commission he expects construction to take five to six months. The owners plan to spend close to $500,000 on upgrades, he said.

Champps, 5030 S. 74th St., will close on May 22, the company said in a letter to Mayor Michael Neitzke.

"We do cherish our time in business in Greenfield for the past 17 years, but it is now time for the ownership to move on with their respective life," Operating Partner William D. Etter said.
