Council to get cheaper solution

April 29, 2014

Greenfield — A proposal to hire a consultant see if there might be a better way for Greenfield to finance its road projects will go to the Common Council on Tuesday, May 6.

The proposal won the unanimous backing of the Board of Public Works last week and the tab will be no more than $4,000. That's much less than the original $25,000 the board thought it would cost.

But Richard Sokol, director of neighborhood services, said he found a much less expensive way to get at what city officials want. He also said the potential of a separate street utility is not in the forefront anymore, although it's still a possibility.

That pleased Public Works Chairwoman Linda Lubotsky who said, "I wasn't in favor of taxing more for a street utility."

The board recommended having Ehlers & Associates Inc., survey how other communities pay for fixing their roads.

"I think Ehlers has a good handle on this and will do a very good job," Sokol said. "If other people have a better mousetrap, let's find it."
