Health Department gives
tips for flu season
West Allis — Now that influenza season is here, the West Allis Health Department is reminding people of how they can reduce chances of getting the flu.
The best way is to get a flu shot, they said, but they also recommend covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, throwing used tissue in the garbage and washing hands afterward. If tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into your sleeve to help prevent the flu germs from spreading.
Wash hands often with soap and water, use hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol to clean hands if soap and water are not available. It is especially important to wash hands before touching eyes, nose or mouth.
If you are sick, stay home to get better and not spread the germs to others. With a fever, stay home at least 24 hours after the fever is gone without the use of medicine that lowers fever.
Stay away from sick people. Flu droplets can travel up to 6 feet.
Clean surfaces that are touched often like desks, phones and computer keyboards with soap and water. A bleach and water solution is also good for killing bacteria and viruses.
