Jansen Fest fills another holiday weekend in Greenfield

May 21, 2013

Greenfield — The 19th Annual Dan Jansen Family Fest Memorial Day Weekend festival will kick off Friday with food, rides, musical entertainment, a car show and more, all at Konkel Park, 5151 W. Layton Ave.

New this year will be the Greenfield Fire Department's Survive Alive House, a simulated-smoke facility in which small children are trained how to react to a fire. It will operate from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

In line with the theme of fire, an old-fashioned fire truck that has been turned into a huge outdoor grill will make its debut at the festival. With flames shooting and its ladder extended, the truck is something to see, said Julie Rome, chairwoman of Dan Jansen Family Fest.

"And the food is good," she said of the Firemen Catering fire truck that prepares such entrees as burgers and pulled port sandwiches.

Added to the evening entertainment lineup this year will be the band Cherry Pie offering up 1980s tunes. The committee reviewed many bands over the last months, Rome said, "and they put on a very good show."

Back for a second time, after a one-year absence, will be the Greenfield Police K9 demonstration about 3 p.m. Sunday. The demo features police dogs in action.
