Doggie dip again
planned at Cool Waters
West Allis — Cool Waters, 2028 S. 124 St., will close for the "human swimming season" on Labor Day, Sept. 2, but before it is drained for the year, dogs will be able to take a dip from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The annual doggy-dip event is cosponsored by Residents for OffLeash Milwaukee Parks and the Milwaukee County Parks and is open to dogs of all abilities, breeds, and sizes.
Due to the popularity of the doggie dips, advance-admission wrist bands will be on sale the day before the event, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 1. The wristband will allow the patron and dog to enter the pool without waiting in the admissions line. Admission is $5 per dog.
A special on the 2013 Dog Exercise Area permits will be available. For one dog, regardless of the patron's residency, the special price is $10. A license number and rabies tag number are required for each of the dogs to be permitted.
Run/walk to raise
money to fight pain
West Allis — Advanced Pain Management will host its third annual Pain Awareness Run/Walk beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 7 at Greenfield Park.
Proceeds will benefit the American Chronic Pain Association to educate, support and advocate for people affected by pain. September has been proclaimed Pain Awareness Month by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.
The run/walk is chip-timed and will feature a $250 cash prize for the fastest male and female 5K runners. Registration is $20 per person or $10 per person for teams of four or more. Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome at the 3K event.
All registrations include the post-race picnic and award presentation. Registration is available on www.active.com and on www.painawarenessrun.com.

Golfers to aid Whitnall

Greenfield — Whitnall High School will hold its second golf outing at Morningstar Golfer's Club in Waukesha on Sept. 8 to benefit students involved in athletics, arts and academics.
This four-person scramble with a 1 p.m. shotgun start will feature all-inclusive pricing at $125 per person for 18-holes of golf with cart on a premier golf course, complimentary driving range, prize opportunities at every hole, lunch and dinner.
A $30 dinner-only option is available.
The purpose of the outing is to raise money for student athletics and activities. Last year's first outing generated $6,000 for the high school.
Free program offered
on Alzheimer's, dementia
West Allis — The Alzheimer's Association will offer a three-part workshop titled "Understanding Dementia: An Education Program for Family Caregivers" from 6 to 8 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays starting Sept. 12 at the Aurora West Allis Hospital, 8901 W. Lincoln Ave.
This workshop is designed for those with a family member or friend diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. The program will include an overview of dementia, communication strategies, behavior changes, safety issues, community resources and personal care for the caregiver.
There will also be an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with others who are coping with similar situations.

Forks and Corks
returns for eighth year
West Allis — The West Allis West Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce will again present Forks and Corks, which features wine- and beer-tasting and food sampling.
The eighth annual gathering will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the West Allis Farmers Market, 6501 W. National Ave.
Tickets are $25, which includes admission, entertainment and beverage sampling (featuring blends from local wineries and distilleries). This year, food tickets will be sold for $2 per ticket, with samples (from area restaurants) varying in cost from one to four tickets.
Live music will feature Freddie & The Cruisers. There will also be artwork and specialty goods from the local artists and shops.

More than books
going on sale at library
West Allis — The next monthly book sale of the Friends of the West Allis Public Library will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 14 at the library, 7421 W. National Ave.
In the library conference room, bargain hunters will find children's books, mysteries, romance, cooking books, science fiction, westerns and records.
In the atrium will be magazines, crafts such as bookmarks and Polish stars, and specially priced books.
In the constitution room will be nonfiction, miscellaneous fiction (both hardcover and paperback), large-print books, CDs, VHS tapes, audio books, cassettes, software, games and puzzles.
Remaining sale dates this year are Oct. 12, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14.
People can donate to the sales anytime the library is open, with donations marked for the Friends. Things the Friends cannot accept are encyclopedias, catalogs, Reader's Digest condensed books or damaged or musty books.

Greenfield — Greenfield Public Library has a new exhibit of paintings by Greenfield High School art teacher and artist Deborah Brooks titled "Other People's Objects, a Series of Paintings."
The exhibit will run through Sept. 27.
Brooks asked 38 collaborators to choose which of their the thousands of objects they own to be painted. There were many challenges to working from other people's objects, she said in a press release.
Pork dinner, raffles
at Holy Assumption
West Allis — Holy Assumption Parish, 1533 S. 71st St., will serve a pork loin dinner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29.
Presale dinner tickets are available at the parish office and after masses. The cost is $9 for adults ($8.50 presale); $5 for ages 6 to 12 ($4.50 presale); and free for ages 5 and younger. Take outs will be available. Wine, beer and soda may be purchased separately.
A parish raffle will offer $2,500 in cash prizes and there will be basket raffles and a bake sale with many homemade treats featuring apple or cherry turnovers. The raffle drawing will be held at 5 p.m.

Golf to provide
foundation for education
Greenfield — The Fifth Annual Greenfield Education Foundation Golf Outing will be held Oct. 5 with golf and dinner at Muskego Lakes Country Club.
Proceeds will be used solely to support educational programs of the Greenfield School District.
The foundation helps fund and enhance a variety of essential programs and services, including Project Lead the Way engineering classes, support materials for English language learners, the Greenfield High School Medical Club and ACT preparation.
The outing will feature prizes, including a trip to Hawaii for a hole-in-one.
There are two golfing options. The 18-hole option begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. and includes cart, lunch and dinner for $90 per golfer. The nine-hole option begins at 1 p.m. at $60 per golfer.
Those who don't golf can join the event for dinner and raffle for $30. The clinics are from 4 to 7 p.m. on the second Mondays of the month and the fourth Tuesdays of the month at the department, 7120 W. National Ave. Appointments can be made by calling the department at (414) 302-8600. Childhood immunizations at the Health Department are free.
The department also offers daytime immunization clinics from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Thursdays.
