Nathan Hale student's death being probed

Jan. 04, 2013 1:04 p.m. | Three persons were questioned at the West Allis Police Station in connection with an incident that led to the death of a 16-year-old boy suspected of shoplifting, police said Friday.

The incident happened shortly after 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at a convenience store at 92nd Street and Schlinger Avenue in West Allis. When police arrived, they found the boy being restrained by customers. The boy had stopped breathing and police immediately began CPR. Fire Department personnel took over when they arrived and resuscitated him. He was then taken to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa where he later died.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the actions of all those involved, West Allis Acting Police Chief Charles Padgett said. The three who were questioned at the station were interviewed the day of the incident. Police will not release details of the incident until the investigation is complete and the DA's office has made its determination, he said.

West Allis fire crews remain at scene of hobby shop blaze

Jan. 01, 2013 11:18 a.m. | West Allis firefighters are still on the scene of a fire that destroyed a hobby shop near W. 80th and National Ave. Monday night.

"It's going to be a long day today for them," said Assistant Chief Gary Streicher, with the West Allis Fire Department. "It's extremely cold. They are going to have to take lots of breaks."

Firefighters received a call about 9:45 p.m. that flames could be seen in the windows of Happy Hobby. The fire quickly grew, blowing out the windows and prompting the West Allis firefighters to call for assistance in what they considered to be a two-alarm fire. Firefighters from Brookfield, Wauwatosa, Greenfield, New Berlin, Franklin, Milwaukee and Oak Creek responded.

The fire was brought under control by about 2 a.m. and nobody was injured. But crews were still working on spot fires that still burned Tuesday morning, Streicher said.

"It was extremely slippery because we were throwing a lot of water and it was so cold," he said. The Department of Public Works had to come put down salt to keep the firefighters from slipping.
