Woman arrested by Greenfield police for 4th drunken driving charge while out on bail for 3rd

Nov. 20, 2012 1:48 p.m. | A 53-year-old Milwaukee woman was arrested on a fourth-offense drunken driving charge while she was out on bail for her third pending drunken driving charge last week.

According to Greenfield police:

Police responded to a call of a reckless driver who struck a fence in the parking lot at Burger King, 4555 W. Forest Home Ave., shortly before 11 a.m. Nov. 14. Although the driver fled before police arrived, officers identified the suspect from a license plate that was left at the scene.

Police found the woman at her residence in the 2400 block of S. 43rd St. in Milwaukee. The woman failed field sobriety tests and admitted drinking vodka before driving to Burger King that morning. Her blood alcohol content was 0.24.

She was arrested for fourth-offense drunken driving and was transported to the hospital for a legal blood draw. When police later discovered the woman was out on bail for a pending drunk driving charge at the time of the incident, she was also arrested for bail jumping.

Cheap I-94 route expensive for West Allis, officials say

May 17, 2013 11:36 a.m. | West Allis officials are encouraging business owners and residents to the third set of open house public meetings on Interstate 94 options that could have a crucial affect on the city.

Officials want the on- and off-ramps at 70th/68th streets and at 60th/Hawley Road preserved as they are now partly so that businesses won't be harmed and partly because of fears that West Allis residents will be stuck in backups getting onto the freeway at rush hours.

The open houses will be held next week by the state Department of Transportation.

While most of the I-94 alternatives being considered do include restoring the existing I-94 ramps at 70th/68th and 60th/Hawley, the cheapest alternative does not include all of these ramps. City officials hope to encourage the DOT not to choose the cheapest alternative.

The first open house will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wisconsin State Fair Park's Tommy Thompson Youth Center, gate 5, at 640 S. 84th St. The second open house will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Marquette University High School, 3401 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Greenfield's PaveDrain named most promising water start-up

May 07, 2013 11:34 a.m. | PaveDrain LLC, which makes permeable concrete block mats, has been named the most promising early-stage venture in the Imagine H2O Competition.

The Greenfield company won $15,000 in the competition, which attracted more than 70 start-ups from 12 countries.

PaveDrain sells the mats to companies, universities and others for paving large surfaces. The mats allow storm water to seep into the ground through joints between the blocks. Then the water goes into the ground to replenish the water table rather than running off and creating problems with potential flooding.

The company was founded by Doug Buch in his basement in 2009. Buch previously did technical sales in the civil engineering field.

"Our existing surfaces, streets, driveways and roofs are impermeable, so the water has to be taken somewhere. What we're trying to solve is all this flooding," Buch said. "This can turn the world into more of a sponge like it originally was."

DA John Chisholm clears West Allis officers of wrongdoing in death

April 29, 2013 3:14 p.m. | Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm has cleared West Allis police of wrongdoing in the death of Robert W. Maurina, 46, who died the day after police punched him and used a Taser on him.

West Allis police did not use excessive force when they attempted to subdue Maurina, who was "violently resistive" when workers at Aurora West Allis Memorial Hospital tried to take a blood sample for alcohol testing on Nov. 28, according to a letter from Chisholm to Charles Padgett, West Allis' acting police chief .

The medical examiner ruled Maurina's death natural, due to heart disease, according to records.

Chisholm's letter says Medical Examiner Brian Peterson "indicated that he could draw no connection between the confrontation with the West Allis Police in the hospital and Robert Maurina's death."

"I find no evidence to contradict the conclusion of the medical examiner or to believe that the officers acted in excess of their lawful authority while attempting to recover evidence of Maurina's intoxication," Chisholm's letter says.
