Life as a single man

Poker, Bowling, Craps, Gambling, Las Vegas, My-Sugar-Na, Nostalga, Reno, Restaurants, Vacation

(Pre-blog side note; I am now on Day 10 trying to complete this report on my trip to bowl the USBC Open Championships - aka Nationals - in Reno.  However in the interim, I've had to attend the high school graduation of (Sponsor's Name Here)'s Official Son, Mitten, as well as to throw his graduation and 18th birthday party.  And in the tradition of his old man, the day after his 18th birthday he made me take him to Potawatomi to play bingo and get his birthday points added to his account.  With any luck, this trip report will be completed and posted today.)

Auto Insurance

This is just a brief reminder.  Since June 1st it is required by state law that all vehicles on the road be insuredand that proof of insurance be provided to officers upon request.  Failure to comply with these statutes could result in being issued a citation for each offense.  Therefore, before driving a vehicle make sure you have adequate insurance and proof of the insurance.  Contact your vehicle insurance company or your local police department if you have any questions.

Facebook

Almost everyone I know has a Facebook account. I can’t tell you how much time is invested on behalf of every member, but it’s probably more than should be.

On Facebook, there are hundreds, possibly thousands of applications one can browse through. Becoming a fan of this or that, farming, mafia and fishing, no stone is left unturned. Call it a virtual world for adults. Instead of playing video games all day, we spend time creating families, “playing” war and taking care of pets.

Teen resale shop opens in Greenfield

Teen resale

Plato's Closet, a resale clothing shop for teens and twenty-somethings, has opened in Greenfield at 7820 W. Layton Ave. It is the second teen resale shop in the area, following the launch of Fashion Xchange in Brookfield in March.

Plato's Closet is a franchise, part of the Winmark Corp. chain of locally-owned stores that includes Play It Again Sports. The new store is buying merchandise now from the public, and will start selling later this summer when they have enough inventory.

Greenfield Assessment Reduced - WE DID IT!

Several blogs back, I ranted about the high assessment we received in May of 2009 on our condo located in Greenfield.  After three attempts to get the assessment lowered, we FINALLY were notifed last week that our assessment was dropped by approximately $28K!  How did we do it?  We were diligent.  I kept printouts of the one condo unit that sold in 2009 and the same for condos that have been up for sale for a year or more and the low, low prices that are being asked due to the economic downturn.  I sent these printouts along with several newspaper articles about home/condo values to the Assessor's office by a specified deadline.   We are still assessed a bit high but we are grateful just the same.  It is a nice feeling that we were heard by someone.  All of our hard work paid off for those other condo owners in our complex who did not attempt to lower their assessments.   They also got their assessments lowered like we did.  Some people just go with the flow and don't "protest" when something is definitely wrong.  I can honestly say, that's a niche I will never crawl into!  Unfortunately, many units are much more updated and fancied up compared to our unit and yet we all pay the same taxes based upon the same assessments.  That's just wrong but life isn't fair and we just have to deal with the wrongs and move on.

Remember!  Vote for the people you feel that will help our city of Greenfield and our state move forward with jobs, new companies, lower taxes and for those who have a genuine interest in making our cities and state the right place to stay, raise a family and retire in.

Bullies, what do we do?

With the school year coming to end, it seems the kids are out to get each other. I have heard of several cases of bullying going on in different schools and parents going to school officals and not much is being done. But then again, go to the West Allis Police and they won't do much either, you know "freedom of speech".

Way past due lightning round - World Cup edition

James family, Patriotism, Star-Spangled Banner, YouTube

"USA!  USA!  USA!" shouted the middle-aged man from his easy chair at about 2:15 PM Saturday...  Yeah, I know I should have been preparing for Sloppy's birthday party, but this IS the World Cup, you know...   Love this clip, followed a little later by this one...  Brilliant job with the version of the Star-Spangled Banner.  They used an instrumental version that was quick and powerful.  That kind of crap apparently wouldn't work in the States... Still bothers me that I didn't get to what could be the only World Cup held in the USA in my lifetime; I would have thought with the United States' marketing superiority over other countries that we would have been granted another by now... I did manage to fit into one of my World Cup '94 T-shirts... Absolutely must credit ESPN for their fine coverage of the games so far.  They have removed the ubiquitous ticker that crawls along the bottom of the screen, the limited graphics are sharp and clear, and they have remarkably little advertising on the screen during play... The announcers, on the other hand - how do I say this? - If you are a Eurosnob and think that games can only be viewed with British, Irish or Scottish announcers, then you've gotten your wish...  For me, I'd prefer me some John Paul Dellacamera... My Saturday actually started at 6:30 AM with the Greece v. South Korea game... I've seen all of two games and parts of two others, and I've actually seen five goals in the first two days... While in New York in early July, one of the stops will be at either Kinsale Tavern or Ship of Fools to watch a Final Four game.  My-Sugar-Na actually didn't say no.  We spent the opening weekend of World Cup 2006 watching the games from a bar in Ames, IA.  Of course, the best part of those games was clearly halftime...  Now comes the long wait until Friday's game when USA plays Slovenia.

At Face Value

If you were handed a one dollar bill, what would you see? You will notice the face of George Washington, serial numbers, and signatures of both the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury. It also has various words such as Washington, D.C., legal tender, and Federal Reserve. Unless you become President, or The Treasurer, chances are, you will not see much change to this denomination.

When you come upon an individual, known or unknown, what do you see? I am sure you can point out certain physical characteristics of friends and family members.   The color of a loved one’s eyes, their smile and build as well. Beyond that, it takes years to get to know someone, inside and out, to see their true nature.

A new blog! With no focus!

About me, East Side, Chicago

A recipe for success, indeed.

I read many of the local NOW blogs on a fairly consistent basis. I find some of them amusing, some of them frustrating, and some downright confusing. Either way, they seem to be entertaining for the author, if nothing else. Kudos to them for creating something of their own. It looked interesting enough that I wanted to try it out for myself.

Imagine a place....

  • You have to qualify to travel
  • When selected to travel, you can't leave your hotel
  • TVs and newspapers are removed from the hotel room
  • You are told what to wear
  • You are told how to act; free expression isn't cool
  • You can't sing
  • You can't dance
  • People will spot you if you look at others outside your group

Call me when the world is perfect

Free market, James family, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, My-Sugar-Na, Restaurants

If you've ever read my comments on restaurants, you know that I far, far prefer locally owned restaurants over chains.  All things being equal, the independent proprietor - with his life savings possibly invested in the business - will almost always get my business over even the best of chains (Side note; I understand that the free market dictates why an business will succeed or fail [and that's the way it should be] but I just can't get a handle on why Red Lobster's parking lot is always packed, there have been about four different restaurants on the corner on 76th & Forest Home in the past decade.)

Canadian Friends and Travel

Strawberry Fest in Waupaca, Waupaca, Door County, Best Western, Americinn, Sturgeon Bay, Canada, Wisconsin Strawberries.

The month of June has flown by as fast as a cheetah after its lunch. There was a lot of travel, socializing and good food involved. It all started with a very nice Memorial Day cookout in my backyard, then the weeklong visit from an online Canadian lady friend, ending this past weekend with the Strawberry Fest up in Waupaca. WHEW! I am worn out just thinking about it.

The Memorial Day cookout  that started out for just two or three people escalated into a "gathering" of family, friends and adopted family. I provided the protein which the grandson said he would grill and the invited guests all brought something to share. Perhaps the best part was the great visit from the third grandson who just got out of the Army along with his new wife. He's an Afghanistan vet and, thank God, came back whole. So, there was that to celebrate. His new wife got the grandmother seal of approval too.  Everyone ate good as there were hardly any leftovers. The younger ones did all the cleanup for me which was a huge help.

Will You Stay In Wisconsin When You Retire?

Although my husband and I have about 11 or 12 years to work before we retire (unless we are fortunate enough to retire earlier), we have several friends and relatives who have retired and/or plan to retire in the near future.  Several have moved out of Wisconsin, several are considering it and one has moved out of Wisconsin and returned after being gone about 8 years.  I would like some feedback on why you will be moving out of Wisconsin and also if you are going to stay in Wisconsin or have.

Thanks.

Who Are "The Jones" Anyway

"The Jones" are a make-believe family everyone strives to be like. They range in age, race, size, education, and personalities, yet the one thing in common is people trying to keep up with them. "The Jones" are ruining people's financial well-being and destroying our children. They are teaching people to not think for themselves and what they need to sustain life, like the basics first; food, shelter, clothes.

They are teaching people, "I want what they have" and "I deserve what they have" even, if they have not earned it or cannot afford it. Let's bring things back to reality and remember material things, huge homes, and fancy schmancy cars do not constitute happiness, replace quality family time, or build forever friends (BFFs.)
