2-1-1 call centers provide a 24-hour central access point for people in need of family, health and social services. During times of personal crisis or community disaster the free, confidential helpline makes it easy for residents to get connected to information and assistance.
Since its inception in 2002 as the service provider for Milwaukee County, IMPACT 2-1-1 has received over 1.4 million requests for assistance including nearly 200,000 contacts in 2013. Clients connect with trained community resource specialists by dialing 2-1-1, texting 2-1-1 [898-211] or initiating an online chat; or by searching the online resource database independently at http://www.impactinc.org/impact-2-1-1/.
Programs and resources are plentiful in Southeastern Wisconsin but, without a 2-1-1 system in place, it is difficult to know where they are, how to access them, and who is eligible to receive services - particularly in a mobile society where people live in one county and work in another county.
IMPACT 2-1-1 receives strong support from local United Ways in Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Washington and Waukesha counties; as well as Milwaukee County government and the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services. As such, IMPACT 2-1-1 is one of the best examples of a public/private partnership in Wisconsin. Corporations and foundations are joined by many individuals without whom this vital community resource would not exist.
Wisconsin's 72 counties are grouped into nine regions; each region served by an independent 2-1-1 call center. The call centers within Wisconsin and across the country operate according to standards set forth by the Alliance of Information & Referral Systems; and all 2-1-1s are linked to allow for cross coverage during disasters, emergencies, or times of exceptionally high volume.
