Deep in the Heart of Taxes - Greenfield Library Latest

WELCOME BACK BLOG READERS!

As time rolls towards February and the looming tax season, Greenfield Library is set to help you.  The following are some upcoming events at the Library.

AARP TAX ASSISTANCE IS BACK!!!

The American Association of Retired Persons/TaxAide Tax Service will once again be offering free tax assistance at Greenfield Public Library.

Tax counselors will be available only on MONDAYS from 10:00am-4:00pm and TUESDAYS from 10:00am-2:00pm starting February 3rd through April 15th.

Appointments MUST be made in-person only, during the dates and times noted above.  The Library does NOT schedule appointments, so you will have to make an appointment with the AARP representatives when they are here in-person.

Remember, after you have made your appointment with the AARP representatives, to come prepared and to bring your current tax records and a copy of last year’s income tax return at your appointment date.

TAX FORMS AT GREENFIELD LIBRARY

The paper-based Wisconsin Homestead Credit Form and its subsequent Rent Certificate are now available at Greenfield Public Library at the Adult Reference Desk.  All tax forms are available via copying.  For tax forms only, the first five (5) pages will be free and each additional page will be $.15 per page.  All copying beside tax forms will continue to be $.15 per page.  Please feel free to ask a reference librarian at the reference desk for any assistance.

GREENFIELD LIBRARY ADULT BOOK CLUB MEETS FEBRUARY 12

Come to the Library on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday to discuss his unfortunate death, and the slaying of two other United States presidents (James Garfield and William McKinley) when our book club discusses Sarah Vowell’s Assassination Vacation on February 12.  Follow Vowell as she takes a morbid, yet humorous road trip to historical spots, museums and everywhere in between to learn more about the assassinated and the assassins of our country’s leading men.

The group meets at 7pm at the Greenfield Library Community Room.  No registration is necessary.  To request the book, give us a call at 414-321-9595 or reserve the book online at http://countycat.mcfls.org.

DEEP IN THE STACKS – THE CULLINAN DIAMOND

On January 26, 1905, the world’s largest gem-quality diamond was discovered near Pretoria, South Africa.  Named after the mine’s owner, the 3106.75 carat diamond roughly weighs 1.37 pounds and is over 4 inches long.  By today’s standards, the Cullinan Diamond is estimated to be worth over $2 billion American dollars.

Diamond is made of carbon and is the hardest known natural mineral.  Their hardness and high dispersion of light make diamonds useful for industrial applications, and of course, jewelry.  Almost half of natural diamonds originate from Central and Southern Africa, although significant numbers have been discovered in Canada, India, Russia, Brazil, and Australia.

Find some of these diamond-related ‘diamonds in the rough’ in our book and DVD stacks.
