NEW! HISTORY BOOK CLUB AT GPL!
Become a part of Greenfield Library’s newest book club!  The History Book Club meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm in the Community Room to discuss not only what history authors write, but also how and why they write about their topics.

On October 22, the History Book Club will discuss Over the Edge of the World: Magellan’s Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe by Laurence Bergreen.  Though he never made it back to Spain, Ferdinand Magellan is known as one of mankind’s greatest explorers, having organized the first circumnavigation of the globe.  Laurence Bergreen vividly highlights the high-sea adventures of a crew taken to the brink of collapse in a deathly three-year expedition, based on sailors’ logs and through advanced channels of research.

Reserve your copy online at http://countycat.mcfls.org or by calling the Greenfield Library at 414-321-9595 X104 or visiting the reference desk in person.  We look forward to seeing you at the next History Book Club on October 22.

AND FINALLY…
Whenever we do a blog entry, we usually finish with a highlighting of our various collections matched with current events.  This time, we discuss the granddaddy of all parties.

OKTOBERFEST

Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival running from late-September to the first weekend in October in Munich, Germany.  Oktoberfest is the world’s largest fair with estimates of 6 million visitors from around the world in attendance.

The history of the event dates back to 1810 when King Ludwig I of Bavaria became a married man.  The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the related festivities.  Horse races marked the close of the wedding event that was celebrated as a festival for Bavaria.  The decision to repeat the horse races the following year gave rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest.

Though the horse races ended in 1960, Oktoberfest has grown into a yearly huge German party.  Images of men in lederhosen, women in dirndl, the sound of oompah music and beer, oh my, THE BEER…cloud the minds of those who dream to go to Munich.  In 2007, a record 7 million liters were purchased and consumed.  This is the equivalent of 19,718,310 12-ounce cans of beer.  All this in 16 days.  Very impressive.

With a rich German heritage, Wisconsin, and especially the city of Milwaukee understands the feeling of Gemütlichkeit when enjoying a big meal or a beer (in moderation of course) with friends.  Thus, Greenfield Public Library invites you down to enjoy a book, DVD, internet time, or whatever reason you have to visit GPL to learn amongst friends in a warm and friendly atmosphere.  See below some of our guidebooks on Germany and Munich.
