Give a Hoot and Read Some Books at GPL - Week of November 12
Hello Greenfield Patrons
The library has been busy recently with the recent election and our weekly events. We always welcome you to come and visit. The following are some activities coming up this week.
ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION – SARAH’S KEY
Greenfield Public Library’s Book Club reunites Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 to discuss Tatiana de Rosnay’s novel Sarah’s Key. In this novel, Sarah, a ten-year-old girl in World War II-era France, is taken with her parents by the French police as they go door to door arresting Jewish families in the middle of the night. Desperate to protect her younger brother, Sarah locks him in a bedroom cupboard—their secret hiding place—and promises to come back for him as soon as they are released. Sixty years later, Sarah’s story intertwines with that of Julia Jarmond, an American journalist investigating the roundup. In her research, Julia stumbles onto a trail of secrets that link her to Sarah, and to questions about her own future.
New readers are welcome. If you need assistance finding a copy of the book, please call the library so accommodations can be made. We hope to see you there.
DAKOTA THE OWL VISIT / PAJAMA STORYTIME
Dakota the Owl will make a special guest appearance at the Pajama Storytime scheduled for 6:00 PM on Saturday, November 17 in the Library Community Room. Dakota’s appearance is courtesy of the Wildlife in Need Center. The program is free, but those who would like to support the animals rescued by the Center can bring an item from Dakota’s wish list. FINALLY…
As a special feature for the blog, we will be highlighting a themed mini-collection to show the vastness of Greenfield Public Library’s collection, relevant to the time of year it is posted. This week, we draw attention to one of America’s leading health epidemics and how we can possibly prevent it.
Diabetes
November 14 has been deemed World Diabetes Day by the International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization. Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the body does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. Globally, an estimated 350 million people have Type 2, or adult-onset diabetes. While a healthy lifestyle can curb many symptoms, it is imperative to know the symptoms and causes of what is one of America’s most common diseases. Whether you have it or know someone who does, educate yourself with some of Greenfield Public Library’s titles on Diabetes.
