May Is American Stroke Month

I received an email from an American Heart Association/American Stroke Association volunteer reminding me that May is American Stroke Month.  The email letter below lists warning signs.

Dear Senator Mary Lazich:

As a constituent and an American Heart Association/American Stroke Association volunteer, I am writing to remind you that May is American Stroke Month and a great time to learn or re-learn the warning signs of a stroke and learn healthy steps to preventing a stroke. Please share this information with your constituents and help us build awareness during stroke month.

Stroke is the No. 4 killer of men AND women nationwide and in Wisconsin, with more than 2,000 Wisconsin residents dying each year from stroke.  Stroke is also a leading cause of serious long-term disability in Wisconsin and nationwide.

Warning Signs of a Stroke can include:
"    Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
"    Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
"    Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
"    Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
"    Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

If you or someone you know experiences any of the above warning signs, call 9-1-1 immediately and seek medical help.

For more information on the warning signs and risk factors for stroke visit the American Stroke Association's website here: http://www.strokeassociation.org/STROKEORG/WarningSigns/Warning-Signs_UCM_308528_SubHomePage.jsp

Finally, please visit this site to learn what steps you can take to reduce your chances of having a stroke: http://www.strokeassociation.org/STROKEORG/AboutStroke/UnderstandingRisk/Understanding-Stroke-Risk_UCM_308539_SubHomePage.jsp

Thank you for your continued service to Wisconsin.

Sincerely,
