One of the things I'm most proud of is the fact that my son got hooked on plant biology because of my interest in landscaping and gardening. He didn't like it originally, because when he was young I made him help me in the garden. Because some can look almost identical, I showed him the difference between weed seedlings and non-weed seedlings, just like my father showed me. I taught him the value of deadheading, dividing, right plant right place, fertilzing and watering needs, invasive and non-invasive plants, the list goes on and on. The most important thing I taught him was the responsibility we have to be stewards of our domains and that what we do can either help or hurt the ecosystems that we control - right in our own backyards. Erosion and watershed control, protecting natural areas from invasive plants and careless people, providing food and shelter for birds, insects and animals...all these things he took from me and made them his passion. He has turned his interest into a career - one with many options and opportunities.
